HONG KONG (SE): The Colloquium of Six Religious Leaders of Hong Kong released a statement on September 9 mourning the death of Tung Chee-hwa, the city’s first chief executive, who passed away on September 8 at the age of 89.
In their statement, the religious leaders described Tung as a patriotic figure devoted to both the nation and Hong Kong. They highlighted his role in leading the city’s return to China and his steadfast commitment to the “One Country, Two Systems” framework.
They noted that Tung consistently prioritised the well-being of Hong Kong’s residents and demonstrated unwavering dedication to public service during economic downturns and the SARS pandemic.
The statement also recognised Tung’s leadership in steering Hong Kong through financial crises and public health challenges, emphasising his focus on the interests of the people.
The representatives of the Six Religions each offered their respective prayers and tributes.
The Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong prayed for eternal rest for Tung and comfort for his family.
The Buddhist Association expressed prayers that he might ride on good wishes all the way to the Pure Land
The Confucian Academy wished that through his acts of benevolence and forgiveness, that Tung’s legacy might be remembered.
The Chinese Muslim Cultural and Fraternal Association prayed that Allah recognise his good deeds and grant patience and fortitude to his family.
The Hong Kong Christian Council prayed that Tung’s virtues endure and that his family be comforted by the Lord and that he might rest in the bosom of the Lord.
The Hong Kong Taoist Association prayed for his soul’s return to the blessed realm and be received by the Supreme One.
The religious leaders emphasised that Tung’s achievements would endure beyond his passing.,
“We, the Six Religious Leaders will continue to carry out his will of loving Hong Kong and guard Hong Kong’s stability and our country’s prosperity,” the message said.
