HONG KONG (SE): The Hong Kong Diocese Altar Servers’ Association marked a significant milestone with its 40th annual general meeting, held at St. Benedict’s Church in Sha Tin on September 13. The event brought together altar servers, clergy, and lay leaders to reflect on past achievements and set the course for the year ahead.
Proceedings began at 3:00pm with introductions to the association’s committee members, followed by a review of previous activities and the unveiling of forthcoming plans. Highlights included an award ceremony celebrating Serra Cup winners and the blessing of an image of St. John Berchmans, the patron saint of altar servers.
The event was further enriched by a speech from John Wong, president of the Serra Club of Hong Kong, who emphasised the organisation’s mission to inspire vocations among young people.
Father Joseph Ng Shu-Shing, who has served as spiritual director for 21 years, shared personal reflections before announcing the appointment of Father Francis Xavier Wong Kwan-yau as his successor from September 1.

Following the meeting, Cardinal Stephen Chow S.J. presided over Mass at 4:00pm. Addressing the congregation, he drew on the gospel of Mark [18:21–35], highlighting the importance of unconditional forgiveness, urging altar servers to avoid grudges and serve with humility and love.
Cardinal Stephen also referenced the automatic excommunication of the Society of St. Pius X, clarifying that the Church remains open to reconciliation should the society embrace the spirit of the Second Vatican Council, underscoring the Church’s commitment to unity.
The celebration concluded with the presentation of long-service awards to altar servers who have dedicated five, 10, 15, 20, and 35 years to their ministry, recognising their enduring commitment to the Church and its mission.
