HONG KONG (SE): To mark its 80th anniversary, the Diocese of Hong Kong opened a commemorative history exhibition at Saint Francis University on Saturday, May 9, officiated by Cardinal Stephen Chow, S.J.
One of the exhibits in the hall is a replica of the second issue of the Sunday Examiner, Hong Kong’s English-language Catholic newspaper, published on 17 March 1946. The archives of Kung Kau Po couldn’t trace the first issue!

The Sunday Examiner was launched as a four-page tabloid on 10 March 1946. While high-resolution digital archives of the very first front page from 1946 are rare in the public domain, the second issue features its original masthead and layout.
Father Nicholas Maestrini, of the Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions [1908–2006], was the visionary founder and first editor of the newspaper,
Recognising the need for an English publication to serve the expatriate community and report on Church events in China and Asia, he produced the first edition on March 10, 1946.
