Dear young friends,
“Bear one another’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ” [Galatians 6:2]
As we navigate the complexities of our contemporary world, it is essential to reflect on the profound importance of human interactions. In a time when technology often mediates our relationships, the call to engage authentically with one another has never been more critical. The scriptures remind us of the beauty and necessity of community, urging us to foster connections that enrich our lives and the lives of those around us. Thus, let us call upon the Word of God to illuminate this message.
In the Gospel of John, Jesus states, “by this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another” [John 13:35]. This powerful message emphasises that our identity as followers of Christ is rooted in our ability to love and support one another. Genuine human interactions are not merely social niceties; they are the very essence of our Christian vocation. Each time we reach out to others, we reflect the love of God in our lives.
The Apostle Paul encourages us to “bear one another’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ” [Galatians 6:2]. This call to mutual support is vital in a world that often feels isolating.
By engaging with one another, we create a community where people feel valued and understood. It is through these interactions that we can uplift each other, share our joys and sorrows, and grow together in faith.
In today’s digital age, it is easy to fall into the trap of superficial connections. While technology can facilitate communication, it can also lead to isolation if we rely solely on virtual interactions. A reading of the Book of Ecclesiastes eloquently reminds us, “two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil” [Ecclesiastes 4:9]. This verse highlights the importance of companionship and collaboration.
My personal experiences reveal that real-life interactions foster deeper connections that enrich our lives in ways that online exchanges cannot replicate.
Being present for one another is a gift that we can offer. In a world that often prioritises productivity over relationships, taking the time to listen and engage with others is a powerful act of love. As we read in Romans 12:10, we are brought into St. Paul’s wisdom when he teaches us to “love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honour.”
This call to honour one another encourages us to prioritise our relationships and to invest in the lives of those around us.
Though the future is in your hands, Pope Francis reminds you that you are the now of God [from his remarks during the sending-off Mass in Panama, 27 January 2019]. I was blessed to attend that Holy Mass in Panama. Chapter 3 of his post-synodal apostolic exhortation, Christus Vivit, talks extensively about the “now” of God as well. As active members of this present age, may you embrace the importance of human interactions in your daily lives, reach out to friends, family, and even strangers with kindness and compassion.
A call to get out of the comfort zone cannot be simply reduced to a simple content of a motivational speech. It is a call to action. Create spaces where authentic conversations can flourish, and be willing to share your own experiences and struggles. Remember that each interaction is an opportunity to reflect Christ’s love to the world.
Let us pray for the grace to cultivate meaningful relationships and to recognise the beauty of God’s presence in each person we encounter. May we always strive to embody the love of Christ in our interactions, building a community that reflects his light and love.
One Heart and One Soul,
