MANILA (RVA News): Amid escalating political tensions in the Philippines, Jose Cardinal Advincula, the archbishop of Manila, issued a heartfelt call for prayer, sobriety, and reconciliation on November 27.

Expressing deep concern over a “brewing political storm,” the cardinal urged national leaders and citizens to prioritise unity and the welfare of the country’s most vulnerable.

In his statement, Cardinal Advincula highlighted how the intensifying political discord is diverting attention from pressing issues, particularly the plight of those affected by recent typhoons. He emphasised the need for a collaborative and respectful approach to governance.

His plea for unity comes at a time of heightened tensions between the president, Ferdinand Marcos Jr., and the vice president, Sara Duterte, whose political camps are increasingly at odds.

Allegations of corruption have surfaced, with congressional allies of Marcos Jr. launching investigations into Duterte’s spending during her tenure as Education Secretary.

At the same time, scrutiny has intensified over the thousands of killings tied to the war on drugs during the presidency of her father, former president, Rodrigo Duterte.

“It is our prayer that they may have the humility to listen to each other with respect and act together for the sake of the country,” the cardinal said, underscoring the values of humility and cooperation among leaders.

The archbishop also encouraged Filipinos to pray for forgiveness, healing, and reconciliation, reminding them of God’s enduring grace and love.

“Let us all pray for forgiveness and reconciliation, never doubting God’s grace and love for His people,” he added.

Duterte, who resigned from her cabinet role in June, has since become a vocal critic of the Marcos administration, further deepening the political rift.

While political rivalries dominate headlines, the cardinal urged leaders to focus on the greater good and find solutions that uplift the nation.

As the country grapples with political, social, and economic challenges, the cardinal’s words call for a renewed commitment to unity, humility, and the pursuit of peace—values that transcend political affiliations and personal interests.
