The joy of Easter on Temple Street

HONG KONG (SE): MercyHK spread the joy of Easter along Temple Street on Easter Sunday, March 31, when it organised a street evangelisation programme outside its canteen with the support of six primary and secondary schools.

The Easter programme showed that Catholic young people in Hong Kong can contribute through diverse platforms, bringing hope to the Church, said Lucia Leung Mei-ling, a social worker at MercyHK, founded by Oblate Father John Wotherspoon.

She believes Easter is a time of joy to be spread outside the Church. The idea for the programme came up when members of MercyHK met with one of the participating schools concerning services for the children of asylum seekers, and then they invited the participation of others.

While primary school students of St. Mary’s Canossian School helped distribute gifts to passersby, students from five seacondary schools, namely Daughters of Mary Help of Christians Siu Ming Catholic Secondary, St Paul’s Secondary School, St. Paul’s School [Lam Tin], St. Joseph’s Anglo-Chinese School as well as Sing Yin Secondary School contributed by singing, dancing, giving drama presentations, as well as assisting in workshops for the painting of Easter eggs.

The students also expressed their delight at the opportunity to spread the word about Jesus’ resurrection and make new friends as they prepared for the event.
