HONG KONG (SE): Canossian Daughter of Charity Sister Goretti Wong Siu-kau, passed away peacefully in the early morning of September 15 at the age of 76, just a month before her 77th birthday.
Born in Canton, China, on 24 October 1946, Sister Goretti joined the Canossian family in 1969 in Hong Kong. She made her first profession in 1972 and her final profession in 1979. She received diplomas in nursing, midwifery and theology in Hong Kong, and worked at Canossa Hospital, from nursing to administration work, for a period of about 40 years.
She had also served as novice mistress for a few years, and as local superior of Canossa Hospital; the Canossian Convent, Caine Road; and the Formation Community.
In 1988, she was appointed one of the councillors of the Province of Hong Kong and Macau, and from 1997 to 2003, she assumed the responsibility as provincial superior. Then, from 2015 to 2018, she again served as vice provincial.
From August 2022, her health began to detriorate and she was transferred to the Canossian Infirmary of Villa Bakhita.
Sister Goretti’s motto in life was “Only for the glory of God”. In the community, she knew and remembered the desires and likings of her sisters; and as the superior, she prepared suitable things according to their needs. While working in the hospital, what she enjoyed most was visiting patients after working hours. Then she would communicate with them, listen to them and keep them company.
Through her loving kindness patients were being brought to the experience of God’s love. Her great passion for Jesus helped her to humbly accept all challenges in her life. This could be witnessed especially during her last agony, consciously suffering with Christ and offering to God all her sufferings and prayers for the salvation of souls.
The Canossian Sisters thank all relatives and friends for their prayers for the eternal repose of Sister Goretti. May she rest in peace!
