HONG KONG (SE/KKP): The Lenten Campaign Organising Committee hosted a briefing at Newman Catholic College, Yau Ma Tei, on February 4. It recommended a variety of Lent activities. Over 80 parish representatives, school teachers, Sunday school catechists and pastoral assistants attended the briefing in the school hall.
A Lenten Charitable Award Scheme is being held for students at Catholic schools. Children and parents are encouraged to participate in the awards programme, which includes drawing, charitable activities, photography, hunger meals, and making sacrifices through the Paschal Lamb money boxes.
Deacon Wong King-sing, the committee chairperson, explained the theme “Peace be with you” and shared the meaning of the five topics for every week of Lent. He said the topics for formation include knowing, admiring, practising, being close to the Word, and growing in love with it. These topics are intended to encourage people to strive to live a virtuous Christian life and values with the help of the Word of God.
In explaining this year’s Lenten Campaign theme, “Peace be with you,” Father Joseph Yim Tak-lung, the chief executive of Caritas, said that God created man in the Book of Genesis with a breath, and he became a spiritual being. He said that as Christians, we should be “loving” and “willing to sacrifice”, just as Jesus sacrificed himself for us. “As Catholics, we should know how to ‘give’ in order to ‘receive’ and not underestimate what we give but trust in the almighty power of God,” Father Yim concluded.
