How to avoid prejudice on others?

We are living in a world where prejudice is a part of it. It is very easy to make opinion about others with baseless facts. Yet, if we are a practising Christian, we can avoid it. In a community where I belong to, we are taught that it is better to love than being right, being judgemental and opinionated. For me, to avoid prejudice is by becoming a loving person and follow the example of Jesus.

— Ginna Dendiego

Avoiding prejudice is very hard to do especially if you are surrounded by self-righteous people. Most of the times, even without noticing it, you are becoming one of them. However, if we are reading the Bible, I, myself, have learned that it is possible to avoid prejudice though it takes a lot of effort. Humility is the main key to avoid prejudice. As it is written in the Bible, “Regard others as better than yourself” (Philippians 2:3).

— Lyn Fabregas

We can’t avoid prejudice because we live in a world where prejudice, discrimination, and racism exist, along with judgmental people who may also contribute to bias-related problems. But it doesn’t mean there aren’t things you can do to prevent or lessen it. We can avoid or reduce it if we educate ourselves. By educating ourselves, we become more than merely knowledgeable; we become able to put ourselves in others’ shoes and understand their perspectives, and another key thing is respect. We may appreciate one another’s personalities, colours, nationalities, cultures, traditions, and beliefs in order to accept our differences. Our foundation of respect allows us to accept things after learning about them without prejudice. — Antonette Lopez

Individuals who are a part of their own group may share a common in-group identity. So if our thinking is not limited to that of our own group it may help to lessen prejudice and discrimination.

—  Alma Pagtalunan

Everyone is prejudiced. And being prejudiced can influence the way we behave towards certain people, and that can be dangerous. Everyone has definite ideas about other people but that will never apply to all. Prejudice should never lead to exclusion or discrimination against others. God has asked us to love each other like the way he loves and accepts us, including our sins and weaknesses. So if someone hurts other people with prejudice, we should oppose them. Common sense and empathy will be our most important assets.

What is prejudice? Psychology defines it as an often negative preconception or attitude toward an individual or members of a group which can have a strong influence on how people behave and interact with others particularly with those who are different in some regard – even if on an unconscious level. In the context of our contemporary milieu, goodness of heart has become the key element of reaching out to others, of spreading little acts of kindness in words and actions against prejudicial attitudes towards others.

Goodness attracts and raises the questions: what is the root and foundation of goodness? It takes us to the foundation of how human being came into existence, as God created mankind in his image (Genesis 1:27), who is the ultimate source of all that is good. It is in this firm belief that no one should ever feel prejudiced or victims of the evils of prejudice toward anyone but look at each other as brothers and sisters as reflections of God’s goodness and love for one another. — Sister Ma. Delia Rubio rvm

Prejudice is a preconceived opinion and judgment towards something prior getting a hold of facts or experiences. A person tends to be biased as a result of lack of understanding of cultural difference. The government as the highest governing body should provide better education where students are taught with good moral values to uphold empathy at all times.

— George Magat Travero

It’s difficult for us to avoid prejudice against others so there are times we hurt ourselves and our companions. But, as I always say, the best virtue a person can have is love, because when a person has love, they have respect, understanding, and look at the positive aspects of their neighbours rather than the negative ones.
