
HONG KONG (SE): Salesian Father Anthony Chung Kwai-sang passed away at 3.30am on February 6 at an infirmary in the Visitary of Our Lady of the Seat of Wisdom at the Salesian Pontifical University in Rome, Italy at the age of 94.
Father Chung was born in Macau on 1 January 1929, and made his first profession in Instituto Salesiano in Macau on 16 August 1947. On 16 August 1953 he made his perpetual vows at the Salesian House of Studies, Hong Kong, and was ordained a priest in Bollengo, Italy, on 1 January 1957.
He was rector of the Philosopical Studentate, Cheung Chau, from 1963 to 1966; rector of St. Louis School from 1966 to 1969; rector of Tang King Po School in Kowloon from 1977 to 1980; vice-Provincial of the China province from 1969 to 1972; and provincial councillor from 1978 to 1981.
He was later assigned to La Serena, Chile from 1985 to 1993 as a missionary. After serving in the Catacombs of St. Callixtus, Rome, from 1993 to 2021, Father Chung retired and lived at the infirmary at the Salesian Pontifical University in Rome.
For his lifetime, Father Chung was a faithful servant of the Church, showing his strong love to God and people, the Eucharist and Mary the Mother of God, and was dedicated to serve the Salesian community and support young people.
He was one of the driving forces behind the Vatican II driven liturgical renewal in the Diocese of Hong Kong and was respected and well-loved by the Salesians, members of Salesian Family and the faithful.
In Rome, a joint-communitarian rosary in memory of Father Chung was held at Gesu Maestro Chapel on February 6. His funeral Mass took place at St. Callixtus Community Chapel in Rome on February 7.
A requiem Mass will be celebrated in Hong Kong at Mary Help of Christians Church, Kowloon, at 8.00pm on February 21. All are welcome.
