One cannot live by bread alone…

While the devil tempted Jesus to turn the stone to become bread, he replied by saying that “One does not live by bread alone” Luke 4:4. We are nourished by the food we take in physically and by our spiritual food, which is the Word of God. Our faith can be seen in our deeds if our heart is a garden of God’s words. As an overseas worker, we can actively practice it in our daily lives through our manners and ways to serve our employer. If the Word of God is in our hearts, others can see the good we do.

Life becomes happier and blessed when we know we have a God who loves and take care of our needs. As food is for our bodies, the Word of God is for our soul. Receiving him through Holy Communion is the best, however because of the situation we are facing at the moment, receiving him through spiritual communion is my sustenance.

College life has been very hectic and demanding for my well-being. In consequence, I tend to indulge myself with my favourite food, novels, anime, etc., as a way of coping with all the stress and pressure. However, I realised that I could not live by these material things alone. Amidst my personal and academic struggles, I cannot live by merely comforting myself with materials. I need spiritual nourishment, which I can get from praying, reading the bible and going to church. I live my life before all my struggles, not just by material things but also by constantly strengthening my relationship with God.

Jesus is teaching us to feed first our souls by the Word of God and not only our human body, which needs food for nourishment. Could he not, for a moment, release divine energy when his body was weak from hunger? Jesus refused to be self-serving. He had higher goals.

As Jesus showed me his example, I also have to feed first my soul to gain salvation, listen to his powerful words, live by it day by day, and follow his commands with humility. Receiving him sacramentally is also my way of spiritual nourishment.

Jesus is telling us to seek God first in anything we do, and we will find love and life. As an overseas worker with two kids, I thought that once I can give everything and anything to them, they will be okay. But then I discovered that material things would only give temporary happiness and satisfaction, not true happiness. We feel empty inside. The steadfast love that one receives from family, relatives, friends and loved ones will let us achieve true contentment.

We cannot live solely by depending on material things. We have to explore and find the missing pieces that would complete us, which can mean we need to step out of our comfort zones to search for God.
