Ways to reduce waste

We can segregate our own rubbish like plastic, metals and papers. In fact, we can earn by selling them. When we leave home, we can make sure that we bring our own cutlery and water bottles. Whenever we go to market, grocery or shopping area, we should always bring  our own bags so that we can reduce the use of plastic bag. But just in case we forget to bring any, we should reuse and recycle the new plastic bag we get from the shop. We can stop buying new clothes, and try to change the design of the old clothes. Or we can donate some of our old clothes that are still in good condition to the donation centres. By doing this we can help others who can’t afford to buy for themselves. Lastly, if you love planting try to make your own fertiliser by using peel of fruits and vegetables. I know there are a lot of people who have turned to planting during the lockdown in the pandemic. Let’s all learn how to reduce waste to save the earth for the future generations

There are so many ways to reduce waste like to avoid buying products with excessive packaging or wrapped with materials that is not biodegradable. We should use our own reusable shopping bags or containers and refuse plastic bags at the store. Avoid single-use containers or utensils. Purchase wisely and recycle. Buying second hand products when possible and donate used goods.

Waste reduction is a process that includes reuse, regular collection, recycling, safe disposal and composting. So it’s not too late if we all do our part.

We can see so much plastic in the ocean, which find their ways into fish stomach and bird nests. The plastic waste should be picked up before it sinks to the seabed or before weather, wind and sun break it down into microplastic. The problem with plastic is that it is inexpensive to produce, making it very easy to be thrown away.  That is why we should avoid overusing them or give them a new life after using them.

Some of the kid’s uniform that have become too small can be brought to school and be passed on to some younger students. Old towels can be used as rags to wipe the floor. We can also consider letting our food waste to compost to become fertilizers for our plants.

Waste is posing a big threat into our environment. One of the causes of waste building up is our bad habit to buy things we don’t really need, and eventually throw them away. Without proper disposal, it will accumulate and create environmental problem that may risk our health. We need to be responsible consumers supporting sustainable production.

In a creative way, I have learned how to repair things rather than discarding them. In doing so, I can help reduce waste and to produce a better environment to live in.  — Nelly Manzano

Overpopulation leads to the accumulation of waste rapidly. If we cannot manage proper waste disposal, it will affect our environment, or even cause flooding in the city.

As an overseas worker, I saw a lot of unwanted goods that are being thrown away by some people. Stuffs that only add to the brimming waste in the landfills. Surprisingly, these goods are still in good conditions and are fully functional. It is just sad that they are not appreciated by their owners because they could easily buy anything they want. I am sure those things will be valued by the less fortunate. It would be better if they could just donate it to the charity if they don’t want to use it anymore instead of dumping it to the trash bins. It will not only bring a smile to a child’s face when you give them the discarded stuff toys, but it could also help save mother nature by not adding unnecessary waste. Each of us can make a difference by reducing, reusing and recycling materials throughout our communities and encouraging our neighbours to do the same.
