Before wild animals…

Before wild animals…

W    ild animals contribute to the equilibrium of our ecosystem. At present, studies show that a lot of wild animals are facing extinction and human beings are one of the main causes. If it goes on, it would upset the balance of nature that will affect our survival and health in the future, for all plants, animals and other living things are linked together in a cycle of life. What can we do to help? We must protect them, let them live in peace, avoid disturbing or destroying their natural habitat. We should increase our knowledge about animals and raise the awareness of people. In that way, we can ensure that the future generations can enjoy our natural world with incredible species living within it.

I visit the grave of my deceased employer every year. One time I encountered a monkey eyeing the box of cake I was holding. He had a fierce look. I was so afraid that I threw the box away and ran. I was also shocked by my own behaviour. I came to realise that maybe getting food from human beings has become their new way of survival. They adapted to the new environment which we, human beings created for them. We first moved closer to their home, then we crossed the barrier in between. If we continue invading their lands, it will create chaos for us. They may cause disturbances in our community. So before it is too late, we should do our part. Keep distance, do not feed them, try to learn, observe and think what else can we do to help.

I saw some wild boar once. I felt shocked and scared because they can be agressive. They are also the carriers of diseases that can be passed on to human beings if we are in close contact with them. A safe way is to keep a distance. Other wild animals we often see in Hong Kong are birds and marine lives. They contribute to the ecosystem.

Unscrupulous businessmen hunt and kill wild animals to make money. The skin of the animals are used to manufacture shoes and handbags. Even marine life is destroyed by getting pearls for jewellery. Some are classified as endangered species.

We should respect and protect their existence.

Wild animals will not hurt you unless you disturb them or their habitat. Animals do have feelings. It is important for human beings to have the wisdom to think of the interest of the animals and protect them. We should not disturb their habitat because animals need a space or place where they can have their freedom. We should avoid frightening small animals because there are some which can be killed by a sudden threat for life or after escaping from hunters. We should always remember that animals are part of the earth and need care and protection too.

Wild animals are also God’s creation though some of them are dangerous creatures, that is why they are in restricted and well protected areas or forests. I once went to Safari Park in Africa to know more about them.

We need to pay attention to the conservation of their natural habitats and help to protect them from harm. Exploitation of natural resources from human beings, such as logging, quarrying and mining, can destroy their natural habitats. Illegal trading of parts of wild animals should be condemned. Wild animals deserve love and respect and should be given a home to live.

I had a horrible experience with wild dogs despite being a dog lover. During that time, these dogs thought I was a threat to their home so they got overly mad and barked loudly. They had glaring eyes, baring their fangs. However, I stayed calm and controlled my breathing to make me feel at ease. I closed my eyes and silently uttered a prayer. I did not move an inch and they ended up just smelling me and went away.

Dogs do not like to attack people. They just protect themselves when there is a sign of threat, just like human beings. And this doesn’t mean we need to eradicate them. Animals in general need our love and care. We can protect the wild animals by having more knowledge about their behaviour. We can also be engaged in civic works to preserve them.
