Letter to Cardinal Roche calls priests especially to respect approved texts and reminds the whole People of God that every Sunday Eucharist forms the Church.
(SE) In a letter to Arthur Cardinal Roche, prefect of the Dicastery for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, the Pope Leo XIV wrote that all who prepare the celebration of the divine mysteries, “and priests in particular,” must show respect for the rites promulgated by Pope St. Paul VI and Pope St. John Paul II
The letter was dated June 29 and published by the Holy See on August 14 for a liturgical formation conference taking place from August 14 to 19 at Mount Angel Abbey in Oregon, in the United States.
Organised by the Dicastery for Divine Worship, the gathering brings together cardinals, bishops and laypeople to seek concrete and practical proposals for the liturgical formation of God’s people, Vatican News reported.
The letter does not mention Traditionis Custodes, Summorum Pontificum or the pre-conciliar Roman liturgy. It should not therefore be represented as a new juridical decree concerning the older form of the Mass.
Nevertheless, its publication will be read in the context of continuing discussion about Pope Francis’ restrictions on celebrations according to the liturgical books in use before the reforms of the Second Vatican Council.
Cardinal Roche said in an interview published by The Tablet on July 29 that Pope Leo would not change Traditionis Custodes or return to Summorum Pontificum, according to reports on the interview according to America magazine.
