I am grateful for the opportunity to work as a Foreign Domestic Helper in Hong Kong and other countries. I have experienced both good and difficult times due to the weather, treatment by others, and different employers. These challenges can be inevitable; we either accept them or give up. I focus on maintaining good relationships, building trust, and becoming part of the family’s everyday life. I feel satisfaction when my employer appreciates my work—keeping the house clean and preparing enjoyable meals. My job also allows me to send financial support to my family.

My job as a domestic helper in Hong Kong is a blessing I am proud of. Over the years, I have provided for my family’s needs. Our remittances to the Philippines boost our families’ lives and help the economy by increasing foreign currency reserves. I have learned a lot here; I used to lack self-confidence, but now I am bold. I have even traveled abroad with my employer. I thank God for my work and the gift of kind, generous employers.

Being a domestic helper in Hong Kong is not easy. Homesickness is tough, especially as a mother who left two children when they were babies. However, being away has made me stronger and more independent. Working away from loved ones is a big sacrifice, but I learned to handle everything on my own during my hardest moments. When I feel weak, tired, and lonely, prayer guides me to survive every challenge.

Domestic helper is one of the noble jobs in society. We do not just work to make a living; we offer our talents, abilities, and often our whole heart and time. Domestic helpers are some of the most dedicated workers I know. Working in this role, I have embraced it wholeheartedly. It has deepened my respect and appreciation for all domestic workers. It has also taught me to value money, friendships, family, and especially my faith in my Creator, from whom all blessings flow.

Working as a domestic helper allows me to support my family, provide them with a better future, fund my children’s education, and build a house. I have also gained unique opportunities to become self-reliant, resilient, and confident in managing my own life whilst learning valuable new skills.

Being a domestic helper in a foreign land is not an easy job. Despite the everyday trials in the workplace, our families back home are our strength. We put our trust in Almighty God, our fortress and hope, who always listens to our silent prayers. One thing I enjoy most about working in Hong Kong is the opportunity to attend church services every Sunday and enjoy my days off. With my fellow Filipino domestic helpers, I feel closer to my country because we celebrate familiar festivities just like those in the Philippines.
