The Sunday Vibes 2026 Green Domestic Helpers Cultural Festival successfully took place on June 21 at the Zero Carbon Park in Kowloon Bay. Organised by the Caritas Asian Migrant Social Service Project and funded by the Environment and Conservation Fund, the event adopted the inspiring theme “We Promise: Be a Green Carer!” The festival successfully promoted waste reduction at source and recycling while fostering meaningful multicultural exchange. It aimed to establish equal partnerships among foreign domestic workers, employers, and the public to build a sustainable, green community together.

The opening ceremony welcomed distinguished guests, including representatives from the Environmental Protection Department, the Environment and Conservation Fund, and the Consulates General of the Philippines and Indonesia. A creative upcycled fashion show initiated the event, featuring domestic workers wearing beautiful garments made from discarded materials like plastic bags, old newspapers, and beverage cartons. This show creatively conveyed the message of reducing carbon emissions while highlighting the helpers’ touching personal stories. Following this, guests attached upcycled flowers to a display board and declared their environmental commitment.

The festival also hosted an awards ceremony for a recycling reward program held from February to May, which attracted over four hundred domestic workers. Maricel Villaruel Portugal won the individual category by collecting over 270 kilograms of recyclables, while the Caritas group won the team category with an impressive total of nearly four thousand kilograms. Another participant, Merly Bello Depio, won an award for recycling on 103 out of the 105 competition days.

In the afternoon, attendees enjoyed dynamic traditional dances and musical performances from Indonesia and the Philippines, alongside interactive exhibitions and educational games that allowed domestic workers and local citizens to experience sustainable green living together.   Photos and information supplied
