On 4 June 2019, some 180,000 people filled Victoria Park to the brim in peaceful remembrance of the tragedy that occurred in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square in 1989. Some 1,000 people attended the preceding prayer service at the Victoria Park kiosk.

This year, for the first time in decades, the candlelight event has been disallowed due to restrictions on crowds due to measure to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

The candlelight vigil in Hong Kong’s Causeway Bay area is the only large-scale public commemoration of the June 4 crackdown on Chinese soil.
