HONG KONG (SE): Saint Francis University held its inaugural Thanksgiving Mass on January 11 at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception to celebrate two significant milestones: the conferral of university status on 9 January 2024, and the 40th anniversary of its founding. Formerly known as Caritas Francis Hsu College, the institution’s journey was celebrated through a solemn Mass and a gathering at Caritas Hall.

The Mass, celebrated by Cardinal Stephen Chow, S.J., brought together over 200 attendees, including members of the Board of Governors, the University Council, donors, and supporters.

Ten priests concelebrated the liturgy, including the university’s chaplain, Father Arturo De la Torre, MG. Among the distinguished guests were the Most Reverend Paul Kwong, Archbishop Emeritus of Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui; and Professor Paul Lam Kwan-sing, president of Hong Kong Metropolitan University.

Students played a vital role in the ceremony, with twelve serving as altar servers and eight others leading as lectors and prayer leaders. The St. Francis University Choir enriched the liturgy with their hymns, creating an atmosphere of reverence and thanksgiving.

In his homily, Cardinal Stephen reflected on the themes of love and friendship as taught by Jesus, emphasizing the university’s mission of nurturing love for truth, for students, and for God. “Unconditional love is the cornerstone of our legacy and the foundation for achieving even greater heights,” he said. He called on the university community to remain steadfast in their commitment to these values, which serve as the institution’s greatest asset.

Prayers during the Mass sought God’s guidance for the university’s mission in education, emphasising truth, justice, and love. Petitions were also made for social harmony, the university’s development, and strength to face future challenges.

St. Francis University, alongside the Caritas Bianchi College of Careers, offers post-secondary programs across 35 disciplines, ranging from social sciences to technology and economics. With a student body of approximately 5,000, the institution remains committed to fostering academic excellence and holistic development.

The Thanksgiving Mass and subsequent celebration marked a moment of profound gratitude and hope for the university as it embarks on its new chapter as a recognised higher education institution.
