HONG KONG (SE): The Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong will organise a walkathon on February 23 to raise funds for the construction of a new church in Tung Chung and the expansion of cemetery facilities. With the theme “A Walk to Nurture Creation,” the event highlights unity and care for creation.
The walkathon will start at Tung Chung MTR Station, leading participants along the Tung Chung East Promenade and ending at the main stage. Attractions include a time tunnel, environmental explorations in Lantau, themed exhibitions, and live performances.
Participants can also visit Our Lady of Visitation Chapel in Shang Ling Pei and the new church site on Tat Tung Road.
Funds raised will support the Visitation Parish’s church construction, estimated at HK$500 million, and the expansion of St. Raphael’s Catholic Cemetery in Cheung Sha Wan. The cemetery project focuses on developing new niches and enhancing existing burial services.
Since 2019, the diocese has aimed to raise HK$1 billion across two phases for these projects. To date, approximately HK$130 million has been collected through activities like walkathons, rope-skipping events, and art auctions.
Father Dominic Chan Chi-ming, chairperson of the Diocesan Fund-raising Commission for Church Building and Development, encouraged participation in a Facebook video, recalling the success of the event in Pak
Shek Kok two years ago. He also expressed gratitude to Cardinal Stephen Chow, S.J., and the diocesan curia for their support.
“This walkathon is a testament to our mission of fostering unity and caring for God’s creation,” Father Chan said.
The diocese invites all faithful to join this meaningful event and contribute to initiatives that will benefit both the Church and society.
