HONG KONG (SE): The Catholic community in Hong Kong gathered on December 8 at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception to celebrate the 11th anniversary of Pope Francis’ pontificate and his 88th birthday. The evening featured a stirring concert followed by a solemn Mass, uniting attendees in prayer and gratitude under the theme “Journey of Hope.” The event also marked the Church’s preparation for an upcoming Jubilee, as Pope Francis invites the faithful to become “pilgrims of hope.”
The event was organised by the diocese together with the Holy See Study Mission in Hong Kong.
Cardinal Stephen Chow S.J., the celebrant of the Mass, praised Pope Francis for his unwavering commitment to the Church despite a demanding schedule. He urged the congregation to pray for the pope’s health and strength as he continues his global mission.
The evening began with a concert showcasing performances by young musicians from the St. Francis University Choir, the Hong Kong New Brass Quintet, and the liturgical choir, Vox Antiqua. Their harmonious renditions set a tone of reverence and celebration, drawing attendees into the spirit of the occasion.
Concelebrants of the Mass included Joseph Zen Cardinal Ze-Kiun, Auxiliary Bishop Joseph Ha Chi-shing, and Monsignor José Luis Diaz-Mariblanca Sánchez and Father Francis Ezinwa of the Holy See Study Mission.
During his homily, Cardinal Stephen reflected on Dilexit nos [He loved us], Pope Francis’ recent encyclical published on October 24. The encyclical explores the Sacred Heart of Jesus as a profound manifestation of divine and human love.
The cardinal highlighted its relevance in today’s world, where relationships are often superficial and driven by consumerism. He called on the faithful to embrace the encyclical’s message by fostering genuine relationships and using human love as a vessel for divine love.

“Understanding the pope’s message will help us better understand synodality,” he explained. “If synodality is just another movement without heart, it’s not worth our while. Synodality must reflect the love we have for one another and for creation.”
Monsignor Sánchez offered heartfelt thanks to Cardinal Stephen and all contributors to the celebration, including the musicians and consular representatives present. He noted the significance of honouring Pope Francis in a cathedral dedicated to the mystery of the Immaculate Conception, a devotion close to the pope’s heart. As the Christmas season approaches, he emphasised the evening as a time of reflection, hope, and gratitude.
The Mass concluded with a communal prayer for Pope Francis, recognising his steadfast leadership and pastoral care for the universal Church. Attendees prayed for his health and for the Church’s continued journey of faith, hope, and love under his guidance.
As the Church prepares for the Jubilee Year, the evening echoed Pope Francis’ invitation to walk together as a community of love, united in faith and purpose.
