Pollution and climate change are common problems in almost every city in the world, and it’s time to make environmental stewardship everyone’s responsibility. We can always start with something simple that we can do in our respective homes and communities, such as saving water and energy, and practicing waste reduction, reusable materials and recycling, or more commonly known as the 3Rs. If these simple steps can become a habit and eventually our lifestyle, then we can make a significant impact on our environment in the days ahead. Apart from this, we can also encourage and educate our friends to do the same, while spending our free time with them in outdoor activities enjoying nature.

As a domestic worker here in Hong Kong, I take care to dispose of our rubbish properly and separate those that can be recycled. I also save water, electricity and energy in the house by properly using electronic devices such as lights and electric fans, we can help others understand the importance and value of our nature by starting from ourselves, every tiny step on a small thing can really help to bring small changes in our habits and lifestyle.

There are some ways that I can contribute to the conservation of nature, namely: by planting some plants in our balcony, by disposing of garbage properly, by recycling, by helping to eliminate mosquito breeding grounds, by saving energy, by keeping clean in all areas and by telling people about the awareness of the conservation of nature.

There are simple greening practices that you and I can adopt. Separating solid waste at home is a basic waste management practice I can do. Reusing plastic bags and food containers will reduce the accumulation of non-biodegradable materials that can clog canals and waterways, which in turn can cause flooding. At home, we open windows for good ventilation and limit the use of air conditioners to save energy.

We can preserve our nature by planting a tree instead of cutting it down. Volunteer to clean up your community to give us clean air and a clean place to relax. And the best way to preserve our nature is to follow the 3R’s – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

In this way we can show our concern and love to our mother nature.

Conservation awareness should be for all people. My ideas for this are by using public transport or walking or cycling whenever possible so that air pollution will be reduced. Use natural products. Reduce our meat consumption. Avoid single-use plastics.
— Lydia Reyes

Preserving nature is essential for the good of Mother Earth. People need to realise how important it is to preserve nature. Some ways I can help is by reducing waste, using reusable items, recycling. Reduce what we throw away. If there is a call for a clean-up, I can volunteer to help.

The fashion industry is considered the third most polluting industry in the world, contributing to 10 per cent of carbon emissions. When I won my first beauty pageant in 2023, I wanted to use my platform to send an inspirational message. I decided to have the gown from the ball reworked into a new two-piece, rose-inspired dress. I also wore the same sleeved top again at a student solidarity night. Although some may find reusing clothes embarrassing, it is an effective way of reducing waste and pollution. We don’t have to wear the exact same outfit over and over again, but a creative approach to styling can give clothes a whole new look.
