Prayer and responsibility highlighted on Philippine Independence Day

HONG KONG (SE): On June 9, over 300 people from the Filipino community in Hong Kong celebrated the 126th anniversary of the Philippines’ independence at a Mass on Chater Road, Central. Divine Word Father Jay Flandez, chaplain for Filipinos, emphasised the importance of prayer and taking responsibility for building a strong community and nation.

The Mass was concelebrated by Immaculate Heart of Mary Father Louland Timbal Escabusa. At the beginning of the liturgy, he urged people to pray and thank the Lord for the blessings they have received and for his guidance in their journey overseas.

The Mass was organised by the chaplaincy and the Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong.

In his homily, Father Flandez emphasised the significance of obedience, responsibility, and faith for achieving unity and growth within the Filipino community. Comparing the biblical story of Adam and Eve and the families of overseas Filipino workers, he said it was unfair to blame women or absent mothers for problems. He highlighted the importance of accepting responsibility for one’s actions instead of blaming others. “Accepting responsibility is crucial for personal as well as national growth and maturity,” he said.

He underscored the power of prayer and living out one’s faith through actions as essential for personal, national, and spiritual development. “Faith must be practiced. So let’s live it, not just in the mouth, but through our action, let’s show Christ in our lifestyle … And that is why our heroes shed their blood,” he said.

Before the Mass, an interfaith prayer service brought together Catholic and Protestant community leaders who expressed their wishes for the country.

Sister Juanita Nenet Dano, assistant director of the Diocesan Pastoral Centre for Filipinos, prayed that Filipinos could be inspired by the independence won by their national heroes and work for the country with pure love. She prayed for continuous blessing from God for the Filipino people and thanked God for the grace bestowed on the overseas workers.

The Mass was followed by a vibrant parade and cultural presentation by Filipino community members in traditional costumes, showcasing the rich heritage of the Philippines and celebrating their shared identity.
