In loving memory of late deputy editor-in-chief Father Jim Mulroney SSC (1947-2022)

As a trusted supporter…

For 11 years since we started our financial literacy programme for Filipino migrant workers, Father Mulroney was a constant and encouraging presence. He never failed to accept our invitation to speak during our graduation ceremonies for those who completed their course. He was always keen to write about their struggles and perseverance to overcome their difficulties and of course the message of hope and their successes.

We first met Father Mulroney when we were just settling down in Hong Kong. He was introduced to us by another priest friend. In such a short time, we discovered our common commitment to social justice and to serving the marginalised sectors across the world. This became the hallmark of our friendship.

We have been close to the Columban priests because of their historical presence in the Philippines and Father Mulroney became a significant addition to our growing friendships with individuals in this community who have touched our lives in decades of activism and solidarity.

He will be missed. We celebrate his meaningful life as we mourn his passing.

I was blessed to be part of Father Mulroney’s mission at the Sunday Examiner in Hong Kong. He trusted me to contribute to the Mabuhay section of the publication writing articles on migrants’ issues and editing Tagalog options of readers.

Most importantly, I honour Father Mulroney for the genuine and down-to-earth attitude especially when he showed up in our organisation activities and mingled with our members. He also attended forums dedicated to human rights issues. I am deeply grateful for the gift of friendship he shared with me.

It was with a heavy heart that we got the sad news of your death Father Jim. Our sincerest gratitude for what you have done for our group, FilMCaSS HK, especially to your spontaneous act of generosity during your stay here in Hong Kong. We will never forget how you involved yourself in the Filipino migrants’ communities, as a kind-hearted and compassionate supporter who were so selfless in helping in spiritual ways. You were not only a priest for us, but also a good friend that can be easily approached. We will forever hold loving memories of you, Father Jim, a faithful servant of God.
