Jesus was very explicit when he stated that no servant can serve two masters. Because, it is either he does not like one and is fond of the other. God has commanded us to love him with our whole heart, whole soul, whole mind and all our strength. Jesus wants us to serve him with utmost loyalty and exclusivity. Many times, our focus on God is being obscured with our concerns and love for material things. Money, possessions and even our family should not come in the way of our service to God. And, I believe that is what God requires from us to be a true follower. To serve him and only him.
