Why can’t we serve two masters?

Why can’t we serve two masters?

Jesus was very explicit when he stated that no servant can serve two masters. Because, it is either he does not like one and is fond of the other. God has commanded us to love him with our whole heart, whole soul, whole mind and all our strength. Jesus wants us to serve him with utmost loyalty and exclusivity. Many times, our focus‭ ‬on God is being obscured with our concerns and love for material things. Money, possessions and even our family should not come in the way of our service to God. And, I believe that is what God requires from us to be a true follower. To serve him and only him.

When a person has two jobs duties to perform at the same time, he can only perform fifty per cent of his effort for each of his work. We all know that we have our lifetime to live on earth. If we are not able to use a hundred per cent of our time to serve our God, as he gave us his full love and sacrifice, he will definitely be disappointed because we chose not to love him fully or prioritise him.

In life, we always face problems in making choices— what clothes to wear, what decisions to make, what we want to eat and so on. In the same way, Jesus is asking us to make a choice between God and money or any other things that would take us away from God. For me, it is very clear what I want to choose. I chose God above anything else because if I have God, I have everything.

Jesus says we cannot serve two masters because he loves us and he wants us to be saved by serving him alone, but he gave us freedom to choose.

greedy or selfish and do not care about other people because they are so focused on their own personal gain.

Jesus reminds us to love and glorify God the Father alone, that there should be no other masters in our life; that our loyalty, faith and obedience should be 100 per cent full and whole for God, no other gods or masters to serve.

When we render service to two masters, we may develop more affinity for one than the other. One’s loyalties must be undivided. That is why we cannot serve God and mammon, or God and money.

Jesus says we cannot serve two masters because he wanted to emphasise the most important thing in our lives which is serving God. He wanted an undivided attention from us. To know his will and the path that we need to follow.
