The Birthday of the Blessed Virgin Mary 2021
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
The source of life and happiness
“Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.” (James 1:12)
The series of trials brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic is a tough test for the whole world. They test our resilience, endurance and ability to collaborate. In this protracted fight against the pandemic, Hong Kong faces unprecedented challenges. Thanks to the devotion of frontline medical staff, the implementation of strict anti-pandemic measures by the government and the cooperation of the general public, the situation has now become more stable and the daily lives of Hongkongers have gradually returned to normal.

The fullness and happiness of life comes, not from our possessions, but from our gratitude and willingness to give. Over the years, it has been truly a blessing that Caritas-Hong Kong’s fundraising campaigns have always been met with overwhelming support from different sectors of society, notwithstanding changes or the lack of control over external factors. With a loving heart and by working hand-in-hand, every little bit of help in terms of time, money and goodwill can make a big difference. And no matter what adversities are facing us, together we can be one another’s light in the darkness, live out the meaning of life and know joy in the midst of trials!
The unpredictable evolution of the virus has made us feel insignificant, but at the same time has showed us the power of love. In his message for Lent 2021, Pope Francis said, “Love is a gift that gives meaning to our lives. It enables us to view those in need as members of our own family, as friends, brothers or sisters. A small amount, if given with love, never ends, but becomes a source of life and happiness.” With love and wisdom, we can cast off the gloom, overcome the challenges arising from the pandemic and start a bright new journey.
“And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. As it is written: ‘They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor; their righteousness endures forever’.” (2 Corinthians 9:8-9)

With blessings and prayers,
Cardinal John Tong Hon
