How can we listen to others better?

How can we listen to others better?

B  eing a good listener is similar to having good manners. It is a quality that does not seem to be a social requirement any longer. But if you practise it, it sets you apart from the others and people may be grateful to you. As you are skilled in listening, people will feel be happy to approach you for your opinion and feedback. You will have good interpersonal relationships.

There are different ways for being a good listener. Focus on the person speaking and look at the eyes of the speaker. Limit all distractions. Be patient and wait for the other party to finish. Be curious and show non-verbally that you are listening. Never assume anything. Ask questions and provide feedback.

Listening is a greater accomplishment than speaking well. It can make one become more informed and more sensitive to the happenings in daily life. Listen attentively to what is being said and let the speaker finish his or her statement before you intrude. Do not interrupt the speaker.

— Marrufia Janine Carigma

Listen attentively by showing interest in what others say. Observe the body language and focus on the eye movements of the speaker. There can be indication as to whether the speaker is telling the truth, a joke or even lies. When the speaker is talking, avoid doing unnecessary movements that will interrupt his or her speaking, or may distract you from listening as well. Let the speaker finish the talking before you speak as there should be a two way communication. Avoid judgemental feedbacks and give appropriate answers or views about what is said.

— Fe Diza

The Bible tells us to be quick to listen and slow to speak (James 1:19). In life we are all facing different problems and some may get into depression. When we listen and communicate with the person who is in trouble, we may help her by talking to her in a nice way. Be quick to listen and slow to talk we can know more about what the person’s problem is. Being judgemental is a big “No”. As a listener, we should learn to keep what being shared confidential. We only listen to help the people in need and make their lives better. We don’t want depression to happen to any person. By being a good listener, we can help avoid emotional problems.

Be a good listener by making eye contact with the person talking to you. Nod every once in a while to let them know that you are listening. Listen with all your mind and soul, try to understand the body language and respond appropriately. Try not to fidget or slouch or people may think you are not listening. Don’t be afraid to ask questions which will make the speaker feel that you care. Listen as much as you can for everyone who has something to tell you. In his story there can be a moral lesson that you can learn from. And when there is a lesson, thank that person.
