YANGON (RVA News): At least 17 students were killed and 20 others injured in a junta-led airstrike on a school in Depayin, central Myanmar on May 12, according to the country’s shadow National Unity Government (NUG)

The attack occurred in Depayin, Sagaing region, an opposition-held area already reeling from the aftermath of the devastating March 28 earthquake.

The incident took place despite a ceasefire—recently extended to May 31—declared by the military following the earthquake, which was to facilitate humanitarian aid.

NUG spokesperson Nay Phone Latt confirmed the casualties, adding, “Some may be missing due to bomb damage, so the death toll could be higher.”

The military has not commented on the airstrike.
