MANILA (SE): Bishop Socrates Mesiona from Puerto Princesa, Palawan, in the Philippines encouraged the public to stay alert in order to ensure the lasting effectiveness of the 50-year mining moratorium in the area. He emphasised that this action is just the initial step towards protecting the province’s environment, according to CBCP News.
“We need to continuously be vigilant so that all its intentions and purposes are truly observed and followed,” Bishop Mesiona said.
The call to action was issued after provincial authorities sanctioned an ordinance on March 5, which established a 50-year ban on both large and small-scale mining applications. This decision came after several months of advocacy by the Church and various groups that pushed for enhanced safeguards against mining operations on the island, as reported by CBCP News.
With local and national elections approaching, Bishop Mesiona encouraged voters to choose candidates who are dedicated to environmental preservation. He advised the public to select leaders based on their principled histories instead of those who rely on flashy presentations.
“I hope our people will be wise in choosing leaders and not just be attracted to candidates who are good at dancing and singing,” the bishop added.
“We need principled leaders with track records who are sincere in their desire to serve,” he said.
