(SE): In a letter to the bishops of the United States, dated February 10, Pope Francis recognised their efforts in supporting migrants and refugees Vatican News reported. He reaffirmed the need to uphold the fundamental dignity of every human being and underscored the importance of providing pastoral care to those facing displacement.

Referencing Pope Pius XII’s apostolic constitution on the Care of Migrants, which presented the Holy Family as a model for all who had to leave their homeland in search of safety and stability, he wrote, “Your work in defending migrants is deeply rooted in the mission of Christ and the history of the Church.”

The pope noted that he closely followed the significant crisis happening in the United States due to the initiation of a mass deportation programme. He commended the US bishops for their efforts and stressed that Christian love required the recognition of the dignity of all people, irrespective of their legal status.

Since taking office on January 20, the president, Donald Trump, has issued several immigration-related executive orders aimed at implementing a comprehensive crackdown on undocumented migrants in the US. Trump sought to overhaul various aspects of the US immigration system, including the processes for handling and deporting migrants.

Acknowledging the complex realities surrounding US migration policies, Pope Francis reminded the bishops that the true measure of a just society was how it treated its most vulnerable members. “The legitimate regulation of migration must never undermine the essential dignity of the person,” he wrote.

The pope expressed appreciation for the bishops’ advocacy against narratives that criminalised migrants and emphasised their role in ensuring that policies respected human rights. “God will richly reward all that you did for the protection and defense of those who were considered less valuable, less important, or less human,” he said.

He urged the US bishops to remain steadfast in their efforts. Despite the obstacles they face, including social and political pressures, he encouraged them to continue promoting solidarity and compassion. “Your pastoral ministry is a beacon of hope for many who felt abandoned and excluded,” he stated.

Pope Francis called on the bishops to lead by example in fostering an inclusive and just society. “Through your witness, the faithful were reminded that true Christian identity is expressed in fraternity and the unwavering defense of human dignity,” he wrote.
