As we celebrate the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary on December 8, the role of Mama Mary that I practise first and foremost is to be a loving mother to my son and my family. This love is also extended to everyone. I demonstrate God’s love by loving other people, and I practice a positive outlook on life by reminding myself not to be afraid. By praying, not only for myself, but for everyone I know who needs prayer. Some may not know our Blessed Mother Mary and I am happy to have the opportunity to introduce her to my non-Catholic friends.

Mother Mary has played a great role in my life. She sacrificed a lot out of her great love for God. I have learned a lot from her since my youth. Now that I am a mother, I understand more the great role she played as a mother. With Mother Mary as my role model, I have accepted the many challenges I face in life and have become stronger. I pray to her for guidance and strength. I learned from her the importance of surrendering to the will of God. As a mother myself, my model in life is the Blessed Virgin Mary. I ask Mother Mary to guide me in bringing up my son. She was a loving mother to Jesus from his birth to his death. After his death she continued her support by being a mother to the Apostles. I always pray to Mother Mary to nourish our faith and not to give up easily in times of turbulence in life. I always remind my son of Proverbs 3:5-6: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways turn to him and he will make your paths straight.”

Mother Mary is the Mother of the Church and an example. Mother Mary supported all the teachings of Jesus Christ. Her support and total surrender to the will of the Father is a practice I want to apply in my life. One of the practices I follow is to abide by the commandments of God and the Church. I also participate in the programmes and activities organised by the Church and offer my help when needed.

The role of Mary that I can practise in my life is to be submissive and to trust God in everything. Through the intercession of Mother Mary, she has shown me that she cares for me and listens to my prayers. It was through her intercession that I accepted my conversion and trust in the Lord through the living words that I hear every day. My eyes and heart were opened to the reality that without God I am nothing and with God everything is possible. Through my brothers and sisters, who were God’s instruments for my conversion, I realised that my life belongs to God through and through. I practised Mary’s life of sharing and trusting in God, especially in times of difficulty in life.
