Responding to the cry of the helpless…

Responding to the cry of the helpless…

Some people who are helpless just need someone who can understand and relate to their difficulties in life. I listened carefully and later shared Jesus with them. Giving them a testimony of how Jesus helped me in my times of despair, helplessness and difficulties. It will be an eye-opener for them that only Jesus can help them in their times of need.

How I respond depends on what is essential. I give my ears to listen and understand the situation. If someone is feeling emotionally helpless, I try to give full support to counselling and discuss the root cause of why this situation is happening and then find out how to overcome it. In other situations, if there is a financial need, I will try to spare what I have just to solve the urgent need. If it is a spiritual loss, I should be a guiding light to light the way to restore the faith within. We are not here just for ourselves, but to help each other, especially those in need.

Today there are many people who desperately need help. They need someone to do something for them. I am one of those people who can’t turn a blind eye to those in need. The moment I see one, I will do my best to help, even in a very small way.

I am a soft-hearted person and can easily sympathise with helpless people. I vividly remember one time, while I was eating at McDonald’s, a Filipina came up to me and told me that she had been laid off and didn’t have any money for her meal. I ordered a meal and gave it to her. Helping people in need is one of my goals in life.

I think of many ways to help the helpless people I meet. I practice patience by listening to them when they tell me about their problems in life. I show empathy and offer support in the best way I can. I want them to feel the love of Jesus for them through me.

Praying and giving are my ways of showing my affection. I too sometimes weep at the cries of the helpless, especially when I want to offer my help, but I do not have the capacity to help them. So my recourse is to pray for them and to ask the Lord to send his angels to comfort them and meet their needs. I give what I have — my time, my ears — and make them feel that they are not alone. It makes me truly happy that I can be God’s instrument for his blessings to flow to others, that those who receive them will praise and glorify God for answering their prayers.
