MANILA (SE): Bishop Rupert Santos of Stella Maris Philippines called on Filipinos in Lebanon to follow government instructions and come home for their safety amid escalating tensions between Hezbollah and Israel, CBCP News reported on August 19.

Saying that the government is working to ensure their safe return to the country, the bishop of Antipolo said, “For your safety, please continue to follow the directives of the Philippine government.”

The Philippine Embassy in Lebanon called on some 11,000 Filipinos to leave Lebanon immediately while the airport remains operational. “We advise all Filipino nationals to prioritise their safety and depart the country as soon as possible,” the embassy said in an advisory dated August 16, according to the Philippine News Agency.

“If you are unable to leave Lebanon, we strongly recommend that you evacuate to safer areas outside of Beirut, South Lebanon, and the Bekaa Valley,” the embassy said.

According to the Department of Foreign Affairs, only about 1,000 were willing to leave.

“Stay strong and keep faith. Your resilience is an inspiration to us all, and soon, you will be reunited with your families, where you can find peace and security once more,” Bishop Santos said. He assured the OFWs in Lebanon as well as their families of his prayers, reminding them that “they are not alone.”

He said, “The entire nation stands with you, praying for your safety and swift return home.”
