MANILA (RVA News): Caritas Philippines expressed its full support for an ecological initiative to install 10 million solar rooftops across the country.
Launched on July 16, the 10 Million Solar Rooftops Challenge aims to raise awareness about the challenges and opportunities of solar power and to advance clean, affordable renewable energy throughout the Philippines. In a statement, Caritas Philippines described the initiative as a crucial step towards realising the ecological goals outlined in Pope Francis’ encyclical, Laudato Si’.
“The initiative aims to significantly contribute to the nation’s renewable energy targets, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and empower communities to become more climate resilient by fostering widespread adoption of solar rooftop systems,” the statement read.
Caritas Philippines urged all dioceses to lead the way in embracing renewable energy and called on the Philippine government to enact and enforce supportive energy policies.
Bishop Gerardo Alminaza, vice president of Caritas Philippines, highlighted that reaching the 10 million goal would generate sufficient energy for the entire country by 2025. In line with this commitment, the organisation pledged to install solar panels in off-grid communities and continue its transition to renewable energy.
“We implore all Filipinos, especially parishes and Church-based organisations, to actively participate in this challenge by investing in solar power and advocating for its benefits within their communities,” the statement said. “Together, we can forge a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future for all.”
The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines also endorsed the 10 Million Solar Rooftops Challenge during their mid-year plenary assembly held from July 6 to 8.
