Canossian sister passes away at 83-years-old

HONG KONG (SE): The Canossian Daughters of Charity announced that Sister Anna Maria Vigano died peacefully on July 16. She was 83-years-old and was 60 years in the religious life.

Sister Vigano was born in Milan, Italy, on 31 May 1941. She entered the convent in 1964 and had her first profession in 1967. She came to Hong Kong as a missionary in 1973. Since then, she faithfully committed herself to the life of the province.

She served as provincial councillor, local superior, a nurse in Canossa Hospital, archivist of the province, and formator for postulants and novices.

In 2021, the Italian consul general, Clement Contestabile awarded Sister Vigano the Knight of the Order of the Star of Italy, an honour conferred by the Italian president for her long, dedicated service to the Italian Catholic Community in Hong Kong.

She was much loved and appreciated by the Canossian Sisters and by the people who knew her.

Her health began to deteriorate in 2018. She retired to the Canossian Infirmary in Villa Bakhita, offering sacrifices and fervent prayers. Her missionary zeal for the mission continued to burn brightly till the very end of her life. God’s infinite love has kept her faith strong in the midst of various trials and sufferings.

A funeral Mass was celebrated at the Canossian Missions Chapel on July 18 by Dominican Father Francisco De Las Heras, concelebrated by PIME Father Piero Zambarbieri. Sister Vigano buried at St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery in Happy Valley.

The Canossian Sisters wish to thank relatives and friends for their prayers for the repose of her soul. May she rest in peace!
