The Society of Divine Word (SVD) held a mission celebration on June 10 at the Holy Family parish in Choi Hung, Kowloon, themed around the message from Psalm 51:12 “Renew Within Me a Steadfast Spirit.” This lively event was a testament to the SVD’s commitment to renewal and mission through intercultural engagement and community celebration.
The event featured a Thanksgiving Mass celebrated by Father Johnson Dhos, the parish priest and Hong Kong-Macau District superior, along with nine other SVD priests from the region.
The intercultural spirit of the SVD mission was evident in the Prayers of the Faithful, recited in different dialects by members of various nationalities.
Entertainment was provided by the SVD priests, and various communities, showcasing dances ranging from traditional to modern styles. The programme also included interactive questions about the SVD’s history and current events.
Father Heribertus Hadiarto, presently on a study leave in Belgium, expressed his joy over the celebration in a video message.
Father Arjay Venus, the coordinator of the SVD Mission Animation, emphasised the importance of renewal in life, highlighting the need for rejuvenation and revitalisation. He stressed that without renewal, our lives risk becoming mediocre.
The celebration was infused with cultural diversity, with performances by the Vietnamese Community in traditional attire, the Indonesian community in vibrant red clothing, and the Filipino community in beautifully embroidered barongs.
The event brought together members from various parishes in Hong Kong and Macau, showcasing the interconnectedness of the SVD mission.
The celebration concluded with closing remarks and blessings by Father Natalius Suryanto. SE
