Long serving Maryknoll sister dies at 99

HONG KONG (SE): Sister Ann Carol Brielmaier passed away on 4 June 2024, at the Maryknoll Sisters Center in Maryknoll, NY, according to a press release from Maryknoll. She was 99-years-old and had been a Maryknoll Sister for 80 years.

Born on 28 October 1924, Sister Brielmaier grew up in St. Louis, Missouri. She graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1942 and joined the Maryknoll Sisters on 7 September 1943. She took the name Ann Carol during her reception into the Maryknoll Community on 7 March 1944, and made her first profession on 7 March 1946, at the Maryknoll Sisters Centre. She made her final vows on 7 March 1949, in Hong Kong.

She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with honours in Geography and English from Hong Kong University in 1955 and obtained her Teacher’s Certificate from Maryknoll College in Manila, Philippines in 1957. 

Sister Brielmaier was first sent to South China in September 1947 and subsequently to Hong Kong. She taught at various schools in Hong Kong, including the Maryknoll Sisters School and Maryknoll Convent School in Kowloon. She also served as the principal of the Maryknoll Sisters School at Blue Pool Road.

In 1990, she was the director of the Catholic Pastoral Centre in Macau until 1994.

After retiring in 1995, Sister Brielmaier returned to the United States and did volunteer work with the Santa Anita Family Services Center and at the Maryknoll Sisters’ house in Monrovia, California.

In April 2012, she joined the Chi Rho Community at the Maryknoll Sisters Centre, and in 2018, she transferred to the Eden Community, where she lived until her passing.

A memorial Mass was celebrated at Marymount Secondary School on June 22. May she rest in peace.
