The Santacruzan, a Filipino tradition to honour the Blessed Virgin Mary, was observed in Hong Kong by various communities in May this year.
On May 19, at St. Alfred’s Church in Tai Wai, Shatin, the celebration began with the recitation of the Glorious Mystery inside the church. The statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary was then carried to the parish hall, where the congregation sang Marian songs and witnessed the coronation ceremony performed by Sister Maria Corazon Liwanag, OSF and Brother Stebin Thomas Kurisinkal, OMI.
A total of 29 characters were portrayed by the sagalas (female participants), representing figures from biblical narratives and Christian tradition. The sagalas were then introduced one by one.
Brother Kurisinkal compared Mary’s journey to the experiences of Overseas Filipino Workers, highlighting the theme of resilience and faith. He also shared about his father’s recovery from a stroke, attributing it to the power of Mary’s intercession.
The Holy Family parish in Choi Hung held their Santacruzan on May 26. The celebration featured a procession led by the Santo Niño Crusaders Group and the sagalas, accompanied by Marian songs. Each assigned group recited the Glorious Mystery of the Rosary.
Parish priest Father Johnson Dhos, SVD, assisted by Emma Maltizo, crowned the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
The sagalas portrayed a variety of characters, including reynas (queens) and female saints, each dressed appropriately for their role.
The sagalas were blessed at the 5:00 pm Mass by Father Natalius Suryanto, SVD. SE
