Lent is the time of both celebration and mourning. It is the commemorating of life and death of our Lord Jesus Christ. It can be sad if I remember my sinfulness that I make in my daily life. On the other hand, I feel happy because there is Jesus who came to redeem us and gives us hope.

Lent is a time for reflection, fasting and almsgiving. We have to abstain from meat during Ash Wednesday and every Fridays of Lent until we reach Easter Sunday. So thinking about these things can be sad. But, Jesus Christ said that “When you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites. They neglect their appearance, so that they may appear to others to be fasting. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward,” (Matthew 6:16). Lent is the time to commemorate the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. So in my opinion we can be sad during Lent because, we are the reason why Christ was crucified. It can also be considered that Lent is the season of sadness if we are to feel sorry of our sins that brought Jesus’ death on the Cross. Though these will lead us to the glorious event of Easter, where Jesus have conquered death for our sake and for our salvation.

For me during Lenten season we need to contemplate, meditate and practice to be more prayerful, giving, forgiving and fasting. We need not to be sad but to be grateful for the mercy of God given to us and for saving us from our sins and shortcomings. Let this seasons be a way for being thankful to God for the rest of our life, for through his Holy Cross, we are saved. Be glad that there is one God who loves us all the way.

We should not be sad. Season of Lent is considered as Spring season of our life. It’s the time to contemplate and examine ourselves on where we need pruning and choosing to let go of things, attitude, people that prevent us to grow spiritually. We look forward for the resurrection of God, the glory of Easter time, the glow up of our being, another new beginning.

No, even though Lent reminds us of the sufferings of Christ, our feelings or emotions should never be affected by sadness. For God wants us to be happy. We can give sympathy and be passionate enough to understand the meaning of Lent and the sufferings of Jesus. As a Catholic this season of Lent we give more focus to ourself for repentance and reconciliation. Let’s all embrace our own sufferings and heal our own wounds. By keeping in our mind that God is good all the time. God loves us no matter who we are. He died on the Cross for the sake of our salvation. So, let us always be grateful to God. And may we be free from any hatred and let forgiveness be within our hearts.

For me, not necessarily that I will be sad during Lent, because this is the time to be thankful and grateful to Jesus for saving us. Instead I will prepare myself, because this is the season of accountability and repentance. Instead I will spend time in prayer thanking Jesus for all he has done to redeem us.
