Correcting our bad habits in Lent

Correcting our bad habits in Lent

The attitude that I would like to get rid off is my anger issues. As I grow older, I have been experiencing anger issues that has led people around me to get emotionally hurt and I realised that it may cause depression to them too. It’s a way for me to release my stress but I couldn’t bear to pass this stress to anyone, so sometimes I choose to be alone than to hurt people with this kind of attitude I have.

As an old adage goes “no man is perfect”. We have individual differences in attitude, weaknesses and strength. I admit sometimes that it’s hard for me to handle a problem. Though I know I can do it but at the back of my mind there is fear. Fear for failing if I try. My confidence and self esteem are very low. Instead of taking the hardships as a challenge, I rather chose to give up. But sometimes I am trying my best to overcome my weakness. Hoping and praying hard to God’s guidance for a new me, who can stand and face the hardships alone.

I become more stressed and my judgment is clouded when I overthink things. I dwell on the negative too much. It can get hard for me to take action. I know how I’m going to handle now. I’ll do my best. The dread that drives over-analysis is frequently rooted in the belief that one is insufficiently intelligent, industrious, or committed. After giving it my all, I now see that my effort was insufficient and accept that even though some factors outside my control may still affect my outcome, at least I did my best.

Some of my negative attitudes I want to get rid of is my being short-tempered, I can easily get angry and develop negative thoughts on others specially when I hear unpleasant stories about them. The best thing I did to get rid of these is through praying the Lord’s Prayer.

Everytime I feel that these bad attitudes attack me I will calm my feelings then pray the Lord’s Prayer because for me this is the most powerful tool to get rid of evil thoughts and doings.

After being more mature, I discovered my problem of giving an immediate response even if it is not addressed to me or not being asked. Now to get rid of that, I will give my views to a situation when I am asked to, so that I can answer properly, correctly and orderly.

The worst that happened in my life was when I felt anger and resentment. I may become bitter and resentful because of the action of others who have wronged me. When I felt that happened to me, I am not happy carrying anger and resentment. I just felt weak and sad. But thank God I found a sister in Christ who encouraged me to be wise and compassionate. I joined them in doing spiritual works and other activities. I slowly learned to forgive myself and others who have hurt me so much. And most of all I seek God’s help through prayers. Now I have learned how to deal with negative and positive happenings in my life.

I am usually a quiet person. I think one of my negative attitude is that when I get really mad at a person, I become tactless that I will just blurt out words without thinking. Not having any consideration that I may hurt their feelings. Once we say hurting words, we can not take it back anymore. To avoid it I try to calm myself first to ease my anger and practice how to control my emotion and be silent. As the Lord, said “Silence your flattering lips and every boastful tongue” (Psalm 12:3).
