HONG KONG (SE): The consuls general of Spain, Peru and Colombia joined the Spanish Open day at Rosaryhill School, Stubbs Road, held on March 4 to promote Spanish language learning. The event also showcased the sense of togetherness in the school and offered a day of relaxation on campus.

The event started with an opening ceremony in the presence of the consuls general and the episcopal delegate for Education, Joseph Kung Kwong-pui.

Spanish cultural and folklore elements were the highlight of the celebration. It included a dance performed by 120 students from kindergarten, primary and secondary sections following the rhythm of a very popular Spanish pop song, Macarena, and a recitation of Spanish poems by students from the primary and secondary sections.

A variety show with over 200 students and a few parents featured Mexican singing, flamenco singing and dancing, and a choir of primary students and dancing of kindergarten and secondary students.

The event included a fashion show by parents and students in traditional Spanish costumes.

The main attraction for students were the 25 tents offering attractive games organised by teachers, parent-teacher associations and the alumni association, together with a few outside agencies. Children and parents were eager to join the games to gain points and win better prizes.

According to the Spanish language coordinator of the school, Domincan Father Francisco de las Heras, the language brings together many countries with attractive cultures.

“Spanish is a language spoken worldwide that we introduced several years ago in our school, and it still has room for improvement,” he explained, noting that the school had offered classes in the Spanish language in its kindergarten, primary and secondary schools for the last 15 years.

“We expected just over a thousand visitors, but this figure was well triplicated. The visitors gave a positive appraisal, and the feeling was wonderful when moving around the school’s playgrounds and greeting past students, some of them now parents or even grandparents,” he said.

The last time Spanish Open Day was held was in 2013.
