HONG KONG (SE): The Maryknoll Fathers’ School, Shamshuipo, marked the opening of the school term and its 65th anniversary with a Mass on September 26, celebrated by Father Paul Tam, parish priest of St. Francis of Assisi parish, together with Oblate Deacon Dominic Fung King-ho, the school’s first alumnus to become a member of the clergy.
Due to Covid-19 pandemic restrictions, the Mass was celebrated in the school hall instead of having the entire school in a church as is the usual practice.
In his homily, Father Tam recounted Maryknoll’s early history of evangelisation in China and its pastoral work during the 1950’s and 1960s in Hong Kong, noting the unique appraoch of integrating Chinese culture with that of the West, such as adopting Chinese architectural design in their buildings.

He also highlighted how Maryknoll priests’ devotion and talents impressed him in his personal experience. In its 65 years of history, the school has, through holistic care for its students, continued the Maryknoll Fathers’ vision and mission of promoting integration of east-west culture.
Student leaders pledged to serve the school and fellow students by loyally, faithfully and humbly fulfilling the duties assigned to them. They received benediction from Father Tam and Deacon Fung for compassion and conviction to serve conscientiously in their roles.
Artwork depicting the Holy Spirit, through the intercession of the Holy Mother, granting the school divine grace for it to scale new heights, was brought up during the offertory.
The solemn and meaningful liturgy reminded teachers of their calling to be purposeful educators and students to be motivated learners. The meditative and participative event promises a vibrant start for the new school year.
