Palawan to launch year-long celebration of 400 years of Christianity

PUERTO PRINCESA (SE): Catholics in Palawan are launching a year-long commemoration of the 400th anniversary of Christianisation of the island beginning August 28, CBCPNews. The opening celebration will take place at St. Augustine Church in Cuyo, the oldest parish in the entire province.

Cuyo is the oldest town in Palawan and home to more than 23,000 people. Founded by Spanish Augustinian missionaries in 1622, the parish is now administered by the Apostolic Vicariate of Taytay.

CBCPNews reported that the inaugural event will be highlighted by a Mass with Bishop Broderick Pabillo, vicar apostolic of Taytay, and Bishop Socrates Mesiona of Puerto Princesa among the concelebrants.

The celebration will feature a pilgrimage of the Mission Cross across the island.

The 17th century Cuyo Fort is the most notable structure in the town CBCPNews, reported, it unique as it houses the parish church, convent, and adoration chapel within its walls.
