Heaven in her arms

Heaven in her arms

When a mother rejoices at the birth of her baby,
And casts a glance heavenward in thanks,
No other blessing can make her so happy.
Her heart is full to overflowing.
Such peace and thankfulness,
Fill her very maternal being.

No other mother in history
Was able to wrap the divine infant
In her gentle arms and hold him tenderly,
Close to her virginal heart.
No other can claim that she is joined to God,
Inexplicably entwined, for all eternity.

When Mary holds her precious child
And gazes into his perfect eyes
Kissing his tiny, soft cheeks,
And drying his tired tears.
She ponders all in her motherly heart
As peace and joy allay her fears.

This little one, this son of God,
Who sleeps undisturbed and gently
A mystery of divine proportions
Swaddled as a tiny infant, protected from all harm,
As Mary gazes down upon heaven in her arms.

Every mother, when she picks up the young life that has been born to her, looks up to the heavens to thank God for the gift which made the world young again. But here was a Mother, a Madonna, who did not look up. She looked down to Heaven, for this was Heaven in her arms.

~ Archbishop Fulton Sheen
