
HONG KONG (SE): Jesuit Superior General, Father Arturo Sosa, has appointed Father Stephen Tong Chak-lung as the new superior for the order’s Chinese Province, to succeed Father Stephen Chow Sau-yan, who was named the new bishop for Hong Kong by Pope Francis on May 17.
Father Tong will assume office on November 1.
“We thank our Lord for giving us a new provincial,” Father Chow said on October 4, “We should give thanks to Father Stephen Tong for his generous availability for this arduous and challenging mission.”
Father Tong, was born and brought up in Macau. After joining the Society of Jesus in 1990 and finishing his novitiate formation in Singapore, he studied philosophy in Manila and theology in Hong Kong.
He was ordained priest in the year 2000 and completed his studies in theology and spirituality in Boston in 2001. Father Tong became Director of Xavier Retreat House in Cheung Chau, in 2004. Besides management of the retreat house, he also provides spiritual direction, as well as formation and supervision of spiritual directors.
