Small efforts to make the world a better place

I  grew up in a home of extended family. Since my mother worked as an overseas worker in Hong Kong, my aunts raised me the way my mother would. With the support of The Chen Wai Wai Vivien Foundation, I was able to finish my medical training. From then, I understood how kindness and generosity became a backbone of caring. Throughout these years, I learn that caring for the sick should always be holistic. We care not only about their physical illness but also help them heal their soul. Empathy is the key for us to understand the unwell. It is a skill that together with wisdom are learnt through experience.

Moreover, caring for the sick is not just by being physically there. It should start from our core. We need to be healthy physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually so that our hands that reaches the sick will be secure and stable.

In the Covid-19 pandemic, we have an activity of teaching patients proper hand-washing techniques as we receive them in our ward and just before they are discharged. It is just a simple act but it is a continuous process.

Small good acts can grow big as we start within and among ourselves through self-care, self-love and self-respect. One of the simplest yet most beautiful thing I am doing is loving my parents, my siblings and my relatives. Respect to the elderly runs deep in our veins. A little act of kindness and generosity towards my friends and other people would brighten their day. Visiting the sick, running errands for the weak and making friends to the rude and unfriendly are some ways of showing my care about others. Turning an enemy into a friend is the greatest challenge for it requires a lot of patience, understanding, compassion and forgiveness. These build a better me and will surely help others into better people. Making our world a better place always start within ourself and so why not start now.

The pandemic has brought big changes and created a different world. Many people lost their lives as well as their loved ones. Many people suffer because of unemployment, mental health crisis, and surmounting poverty. Offering our support in this time of pandemic is crucial may it be emotionally, financially, and physically among others. Volunteering our help in our own ways is one crucial way to make the world a better place one step at a time. Being kind is basic and easy. Cumulative efforts from each of us can make a massive impact. There is hope after despair and many suns after darkness. Together, with our efforts of volunteering and supporting one another, we take a step forward to make this world a better, and more livable place.

Small efforts can make a huge impact in the lives of others. As a student, a daughter, a sister and a friend, I want to make life easier to understand and appreciate. I will also take some actions. So here, I can give you five suggestions that I follow every day. Firstly, declutter, reuse, recycle or donate. Decrease your use of plastic. And don’t litter. Secondly, don’t judge others. Remember, you have no idea what is really going on in someone’s life until you have walked in their shoes. And don’t listen to, or participate in, gossips, even though they are online ones. Thirdly, be kind and respectful to everyone even to strangers you pass by on the street. Fourthly, be a positive role model to everyone around you, especially children or people younger than you, and even people same as your age or the elderly. Try to inspire them to take action in protecting the environment by planting trees or taking care of plants. And lastly, be positive and spread love. God gave us the power to give out love, and when we do this, everything good will just come out naturally.

I am small but strong to do some small good deeds to help make the world a better place for many people. I must think good to have a good heart. I must feel good, healthy and strong to do good works of helping others. I must be kind and generous. I can share some food and a pillow to the poor old man next door. I can give some of my clothes and toys to small kids who have none. I can help a blind man safely cross the street when the traffic policeman is not around.

Also, I reported to our neighbour when I saw their three goats fell in the pit. I joined other children in a yearly tree planting project in our community, while my sister and I work on the “clean and green” fruit tree shade homework to beautify our home surroundings.

At home we help in the household chores and we practice wise use of water and electricity. We put off the lights or fans when not in use and we save water by collecting rain water for our plants.

At night in our prayers I pray that children would respect and obey their parents and find love and peace in their homes. I am happy to tell and show my friends and other children about my little ways of helping myself and other people. If many children around the world would do their own small good deeds then the world will become a better place.
