Long serving Maryknoll sister passes away

HONG KONG (SE): Maryknoll Sister Marie Ann Lipetzky, died on May 19at the Maryknoll Sisters Centre, Maryknoll, New York, the United States. Born on 28 December 1923, she entered the Maryknoll Sisters Novitiate in 2 July 1941, making her first profession on 7 March 1944 and her final vows on 7 March 1947.

Between 1943 and 1947, she earned Bachelor’s degrees in Education, Library Science, and studied Gregorian Chant. She also earned a Master’s Degree in Religious Education in 1970.

In 1954, Sister Lipetzky was assigned to the Philippines where she served as librarian and music teacher at Maryknoll College, Quezon City.

In 1960, she was assigned to teach at the Maryknoll Convent School in Kowloon Tong, Hong Kong, until 1972. She then studied Cantonese for a year before going to live in the Young Workers’ Centre where she worked in liturgy, choir. During this time, she also worked as a staff member for the parish at Sau Mau Ping, where she did home visits to those in need for the next five years.

Sister Lipetzky returned home in 1981 to care for her elderly mother until 1984. She came back to Hong Kong in 1985 to work with the elderly in Yuen Long, the New Territories, until 1998. Between 1998 and 2005, she was posted to Macau, engaging in catechetical work, preparing catechumens for baptism and making home visits to the elderly.

In 2005, Sister Lipetzky returned to the Maryknoll Sisters Centre, in Maryknoll, NY, serving as a volunteer on the Sisters Pastoral Care Team for a year. Then from 2006 to 2008, she worked as Co-Coordinator of the Sisters’ “Chi- Rho” Community and was a delegate at the congregation’s general assembly. 

She remained active at the Sisters Centre, serving as a member of the Worship Committee and Choir until 2019 when she retired.

A Vespers service was celebrated for her on May 26Annunciation Chapel at the Maryknoll Sisters Centre in Maryknoll, followed by a funeral Mass Thursday, the next day. May she rest in peace.
