HONG KONG (SE): “We are heartbroken to learn that colleagues have fallen ill, patients are left unattended and a number of priests have passed away in this new wave of the pandemic, Father Joseph Yim Tak-lung, the chief executive of Caritas-Hong Kong said, announcing that the organisation had donated $1 million each to Caritas India and Caritas Bangladesh to help with the acquisition of critical oxygen equipment, personal protective equipment, medical supplies, as well as food and hygiene kits.
Around €24,000 (approx. $226,000) is being sent to Caritas Nepal to help in efforts at combatting Covid-19.
“We send our regards to India, Bangladesh and Nepal, and our prayers and condolences to the deceased and their families. It is in this time of challenge and suffering that we must unite in overcoming difficulty,” Father Yim said.
Caritas-Hong Kong expressed its sadness at seeing the suffering India, Bangladesh, and Nepal, due to another wave of Covid-19 coronavirus (SARS-CoV2) infections.
Oswald Cardinal Gracias of Bombay, president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India, was reported by AsiaNews on May 10 as saying that he had met with Caritas India to work on relief efforts.
“We have already been helping and the Church will continue to be at the forefront, offering our services through our health facilities. The Church in India has a thousand hospitals with 60,000 beds across providing healthcare to everyone, especially people on the margins of society,” Cardinal Gracias said.
“We are also coordinating financial aid to buy more ventilators and increase our medical equipment to save the lives,” he added.
