HONG KONG (SE): The Caritas Charity Fun Fair Series Online was held on three consecutive Saturdays to raise funds for its various services and to bring laughter to people who are under stress and tension in these times of the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic.

The shows, livestreamed at 10.00am on April 24, May 1 and May 8, featured games played between priests and laity, songs by Catholic artists, cooking demonstrations by priests, magic tricks, a seniors’ catwalk, as well as videos introducing Caritas’ services for young people, families and the elderly and its education projects.

Fiona Ngai Sut-ying, head of administration of Caritas-Hong Kong, told the Kung Kao Po that due to social distancing measures, a number of fund-raising activities, such as the annual large-scale Caritas Charity Bazaar and the fun fair scheduled at the end of April, could not be organised. The online charity shows, aimed to attract local as well as overseas viewers through a variety of performances, promote the services of Caritas and appeal for donations online.

Father Francis Xavier Wong Kwan-yau, who is now studying at St. John’s University, Minnesota, the United States, demonstrated his skills in cooking chickpeas during an online show. Father Wong said many of Caritas services have affected by the pandemic and a small sacrifice from donors can bring people peace and hope.

Cho Lai-ngoi, one of the participants in the senior’s catwalk, said it gave her a new challenge and helped her realise that one should never stop learning. She thanked the Caritas Elderly Centre, Sai Kung, for giving her chances to learn in its various activities.
