For non-believers of Christ’s resurrection…

For non-believers of Christ’s resurrection…

I will point out to those who do not believe in the resurrection of Christ’s what is written in the scriptures. There are people who may think that the resurrection of Jesus is only a legend and Easter only means a few days’ holiday. That is why we ourselves need to read the Word of God and be familiarised with it. From there I will perhaps give a little introduction of Catholic catechism and explain the reason why Jesus died for us and resurrected on the third day. I will share with them that as Catholics we know that through death we can join Our Lord and that is a hope we look forward to. There is a saying that “For those who believe, no proof is necessary. For those who don’t believe, no proof is possible” (Stuart Chase) but on my part at least I will try my best to explain to them through the guidance of the Holy Spirit to say the right words.

How can we explain to non-believers that Christ died and resurrected? Clearly the Bible passed from generations to generations mentioned about these. There were witnesses to his death and his resurrection, so clearly this was not a hallucination. Jesus was a real person in history. For those who have made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, they were able to visit the places where Jesus lived during his lifetime and the place where he was crucified. The Shroud of Turin is believed to be the burial shroud of Jesus after his crucifixion. Above all, if Jesus did not resurrect and live in people’s hearts, how come the disciples, who were so frightened after Jesus’ death, and many saints who followed Jesus later were willing to die for their faith? There are many proofs that resurrection of Christ is a reality. But it would take endless explanations and even resort to debates before the arguments of unbelievers. On the bright side of it, there are scientists, atheists, learned scholars who made researches on our Catholic faith who eventually got converted.

People who do not believe in Jesus’ resurrection are usually the ones who do not believe in God. Then I may need to tell them about the scriptures, as the Bible was written by persons who witnessed all happenings. The resurrection of Christ is clearly written in the verse and was witnessed by Mary Magdalene and his disciples. As a Catholic, I believe that Jesus lives with us. I will explain to them what the Church says about the resurrection and also tell them about our Apostles Creed. Perhaps a non-believer may not grasp easily what I share with them but at least I pray that somehow I can plant a seed of knowledge in them. If situation allows I will invite an unbeliever to attend our Mass during Easter.

It is not easy for a non-believer to know the meaning of Easter or Jesus’ resurrection, but it is worthwhile to talk to them and give them some knowledge at least. I would tell them that the Bible is like a history book. All important events were recorded by the followers of Jesus Christ who witnessed what happened in his life and heard his teachings. So all of them are facts but not fairy tales or legends. We believe in history and celebrate our National Heroes Day. All the more we should believe in the Gospel and celebrate Easter for the resurrection of Jesus Christ as he is God.

Aside from the Bible, facts on the life of Jesus Christ can be read from the writings of the ancient historians like Flavius Josephus. In the first place, why will the world celebrate something that is a fairy tale? We have a God who sacrificed his only begotten Son in exchange for our salvation. We have a God who forgives us unconditionally through the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

Non-believers may say there is no God. But how about the things around us on earth that no one can explain how they came into existence? Scientists also find it necessary to write theories about the existence of God.

The Resurrection of Jesus is a matter of Faith. I think there is no logical explanation we can provide.  Just like our belief that Jesus is both God and man …. a matter of Faith. If we look at human history, there has never been, nor will there ever be another man, like Jesus!!!  We must continue to pray, that people open themselves to the gift of faith given to all of us. For the non-believers I will tell them that Easter is the celebration of joy and thanksgiving to God for his love and mercy to people. Because of his love and mercy we have gained entrance into heaven.
