None so humble

None so lowly as God,
our Creator,
Who descended from his heavenly throne
To walk upon the earth,
with mere humans.
Born of a Virgin Mother, in a stable.
King, for whom a feed trough
was his cradle.

None so mild as Lord,
our Saviour,
Who submitted himself in holy obedience
To earthly parents, as part of God’s plan.
Learning at the feet of a poor carpenter.
King, who sanctified manual labour.

None so gentle as the Prince of Peace,
Who rode upon a borrowed donkey,
into the great city of
Jerusalem for the Passover.
Greeted with the palms, and
Hosanna was the cry
Truimphant, and yet
on a journey to Calvary.

None so subservient as
Christ the High Priest,
Who bowed low and
washed the feet of his apostles.
Who ate with them
in the company of a traitor,
And left them a gift that is perpetual,
His own flesh and blood as a memorial.

None so crushed as Son
Who offered up prayers,
Who submitted so humbly
His prayer was heard
And cried out in agony to His Father,
“Let this cup pass me by,
Not my will but thine.”

None so meek as the Lamb of God,
Led to the slaughter as a criminal
Decried by those whom he would save
Stripped of any human dignity
Cruelly nailed upon the wood of a tree.

None so poor as the Son of Man
Laid in a stranger’s borrowed tomb,
Not even his own burial place,
Required for his royal dignity,
No gravestone to honour
His holy divinity.

None so humble as the King of Glory,
Who submits to the
supplication of a priest
Who comes down from heaven
Hidden in the form of
Bread and Wine
The ultimate gift, supremely divine.
